Equity Research Associate - Consumer
Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management UK
Equity Research Associate – Consumer Sector
Overview
The Consumer team at Canaccord Genuity plans to hire an equity research associate to be based in the company’s New York office. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, intellectually curious, critical thinker who is both artistically-minded and detail-oriented, and enthusiastic about Consumer, future mobility and the markets.
You will join as part of a team supporting a very experienced Managing Director of Beauty, Health, and Wellness Equity Research with a mentorship/partnership philosophy relative to all members of the team. As an associate supporting the franchise, your responsibilities will be all-encapsulating. Primary responsibilities will be to anticipate and track relevant industry trends, writing sections of equity research reports, and building/updating financial models. An effective research associate will become self-sufficient to a level that allows the Senior Analyst to spend more time on outward facing research and client contact. Over time, the associate will become the Senior Analyst’s trusted partner, assisting in nearly all aspects of the franchise.
Essential Job Functions
- Fundamental research. You will be expected to track coverage of company products, strategies, catalysts, and competitors. Successful people in this business have an insatiable intellectual curiosity and passion for investing. Gathering information from industry conferences, blogs, trade journals, regulatory documents, interaction with company executives, and live site visits will all contribute to the mosaic of information that the team assembles. As such, candidates will have a thorough and rigorous analytical process and be comfortable with the distillation of large volumes of data points. Research will also be facilitated through conduction of outbound surveys and key opinion leader (KOL) diligence calls with industry contacts.
- Modeling and writing – It’s common to have three or four earnings calls occurring simultaneously in an evening. The associate is responsible for summarizing the key quarterly updates, fully and independently updating the financial model, cash flow and balance sheet models, and incorporating the conclusions/positioning commentary text provided by the senior analyst. Longer-term projects will include the preparation of 20+ page initiation of coverage reports, including most of the text, graphics, and complete models and valuation methodologies.
- Communications. Once you have passed the regulatory tests (Series 7, 63, 86, 87), you will be expected to be able to communicate the key aspects of our investment opinions for companies within our coverage both internally and externally.
- Keeping the franchise running. The associate should possess strong organization and time management skills and the ability to help prioritize key initiatives that create differentiation and long-term value for the franchise and firm overall. You will be expected to be self-motivated and self-driven.
While we operate as a team, the candidate should realize that the senior analyst, while available 24/7, is on the road meeting with clients regularly. You are strongly encouraged to ask questions of anyone, but in the end, you will be expected to work independently and be accountable for delivering 100% factually and logically accurate work under tight time constraints.
Required Qualifications and Attributes
- Passionate about stocks and the financial markets.
- Four-year bachelor's degree.
- Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Word, Excel, and Power Point.
- Strong written and oral communication skills. Highly qualified candidates will be asked to provide writing samples. This job requires strong grammar/writing skills and attention to detail, with no exceptions.
- Candidate must have an exceedingly strong work ethic, be highly self-motivated, highly organized, proactive, simultaneously manage multiple tasks, and have a strong attention to detail. Common sense is a must. Ideal candidate will be quick on their feet, a fast learner, and highly responsive. This is a business based on pattern recognition. The better you are at sifting the signal from the noise, the more value-added you become.
- Superior quantitative, analytical, and writing skills. Must have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely and must take pride in every aspect of the process.
Preferred Qualifications (Not required)
- Series SIE, 63, 86, 87 will be required soon after starting the position, but are not prerequisites for consideration.
