This role is part of Alcon's Research & Development function, a team that innovates boldly and delivers new products and services to help revolutionize the eye care industry, advance optimal patient outcomes and help people see brilliantly. The Principal Engineer III, Research & Development Process & Product Design (Science/Tech/Engineering Path), is primarily responsible for leading the design transfer of implantable products from Research and Development to manufacturing, ensuring milestones are met, and maintaining compliance of launched products. You will tackle complex technical issues, contribute to new product concepts, and engage with senior management.

Specifics Include:

• Lead advanced research and development efforts, exploring new manufacturing processes, conducting performance simulations, and refining complex product designs
• Utilize expertise in computational modeling and experimental validation to drive product enhancements and regulatory alignment
• Contribute to scientific publications, patent filings, and the continuous evolution of research methodologies to advance the field
• Influence key decision-making processes in Research and Development, ensuring design improvements are based on robust scientific principles and empirical data All associates must adhere to GxP regulations by strictly following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintaining accurate and complete documentation, ensuring rigorous quality control, and completing all required training. Associates are responsible for meeting their individual job requirements and contributing to the overall compliance of the organization. Compliance with regulatory requirements and a commitment to continuous improvement are essential to our operations​.

Qualifications: Associate shall have the appropriate education and experience to successfully perform the responsibilities/activities of this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the innovation and improvement of IOL manufacturing and testing technologies.
  • Gain hands-on experience and deep technical knowledge of individual process steps to support ongoing process and product development.
  • Perform complex 3D CAD modeling & post processing, CAM programming, and simulation analysis to support design and process development efforts.
  • Processing and machining polymer materials, along with hands-on experience using advanced CNC and metrology equipment—such as 5-axis milling/machining centers, and lathes.
  • Apply analytical thinking to generate and interpret data, identify correlations, and support decision-making with statistical and evidence-based insights.
  • Leverage your experience in a medical device R&D environment to ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams locally and internationally e.g. to produce prototypes, gather critical information, and support transfer and production scale-up.
  • Conduct hands-on development work primarily at laboratory level, while keeping production scaling requirements in mind.
  • Participate in project teams, identifying and executing necessary activities based on project needs.
  • Contributes to the creation and maintenance of documentation and procedures used for the verification and validation of new and existing manufacturing processes and equipment.
  • Coordinate the sourcing of components and subsystems from external vendors.

What You'll Bring to Alcon:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent in Mechanical, Biomedical, Industrial, Chemical, or relevant engineering discipline, 1 year with master’s degree
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English
  • 5 Years of Relevant Experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (e.g., Biomedical, Mechanical, Chemical); a Master’s or higher degree is preferred.
  • Experience in the design, execution, analysis, and documentation of technical tests.
  • Background or coursework in mechanical engineering design, tolerance analysis, and mechanical system assembly.
  • CAD proficiency in designing components and sub-assemblies, including the creation of fabrication drawings using software packages such as Creo (PTC), SolidWorks, and AutoCad.
  • Prior hands-on experience with CAM systems for developing manufacturing programs is beneficial (e.g., Creo (PTC), SolidCAM, Mastercam).
  • Prior experience with milling/machining centers and lathes. (e.g., Willemin, Aerotech, DMG Mori)
  • Familiarity with polymers, machining processes, and GxP (Good Practice) standards are a strong advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Open-minded, innovative, and passionate, with a high level of self-motivation and the ability to excel in a dynamic, fast-paced team environment.
