Senior Avionics Engineer
All Orbits, All Planets - Join us on our journey
Gilmour Space is the leading Australian rocket company, pioneering next-generation hybrid propulsion technologies for small satellite launch vehicles.
Are you a creative and experienced Senior Avionics Engineer looking for a dynamic role where your skills will make a real impact? Well now's your chance! We’re building orbital launch vehicles in Australia — and avionics is at the centre of that effort. This is your opportunity to help build Australia's orbital launch capability with the Eris rocket—right here on the Gold Coast and at our Bowen Orbital Spaceport in North Queensland. As a Senior Avionics Engineer, you'll partner closely with the Avionics Lead and a high-performing team to own critical avionics systems that guide, control, and power our Eris orbital-class launch vehicles, through every phase of the engineering lifecycle: from early requirements and architecture, to detailed design, procurement, in-house manufacturing, rigorous testing, assembly, and live operations. You'll produce clear documentation, communicate across teams to keep aggressive schedules on track, and ensure everything meets Gilmour Space's standards.
This is real ownership of flight hardware; your designs will help put Australian rockets into orbit.
How you will contribute to our mission in getting Australia to space:
The below is designed to give you an idea of the role you will play. There will be many more exciting and innovative things to do:
- Design, develop, and deliver flight-ready avionics products and subsystems as part of a skilled team.
- Develop and optimize RF solutions for launch vehicle telemetry, command links, and communications—including spectrum coordination, antenna design, RF modelling, link budgets, S-parameter analysis, and EMI testing.
- Support the Avionics Lead with technical execution and take full accountability as Responsible Engineer for key units/subsystems.
- Guide products through the complete lifecycle, from scoping to on-pad operations.
- Perform hands-on testing, integration, troubleshooting under tight deadlines, and operations support (including occasional travel to test/launch sites).
- Review, approve, and sign off on designs, processes, and critical activities.
- Engage directly with suppliers, subcontractors, and stakeholders to ensure smooth delivery.
- Contribute to in-house production of avionics units and systems.
- Apply deep knowledge of avionics regulations, standards, and cutting-edge practices while ensuring compliance with company policies.
- Mentor junior engineers and lead small product teams as required.
- Handle additional high-priority tasks from leadership.
Mandatory Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Electronics, Computer Systems, Mechatronics Engineering, or a closely related field.
- 5+ years of professional avionics design engineering experience (post-internship).
- 3+ years delivering end-to-end avionics products—from concept to qualification or deployment.
- Demonstrated experience in RF engineering, including design, analysis, or testing of radio frequency systems (e.g., telemetry, communications, or wireless links in aerospace or related high-reliability applications).
- Proven resilience and performance in high-pressure, high-stakes environments.
- Solid foundation in Systems Engineering principles.
- NV1 Security Clearance eligible preferred.
Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
We recognise you may not meet all of the below, but don’t let that deter you. We are always looking for hard workers to join our team, so what are you waiting for? Let’s send Australia to space!
- Hands-on PCB development for analogue, digital, and mixed-signal circuits.
- Practical testing, debugging, and troubleshooting of electronics hardware.
- Proficiency in bare-metal, RTOS, or embedded Linux software.
- FPGA/SoC design and implementation (hardware + software).
- Experience with mechanical CAD tools (e.g., NX, Solidworks, Onshape).
- Designing highly reliable systems for extreme environments.
- Integration and verification of avionics units.
- Electronics analysis (simulation, power budgets, thermal).
- RF expertise (antenna design, link budgets, EMI testing).
- Prior experience in space, aerospace, or automotive sectors.
- Familiarity with space-grade standards (e.g., GSFC-STD-7000A, DO-254, DO-178).
- Comfort in fast-paced environments with both waterfall and agile approaches.
- Strong team player eager to support the department
If you're ready to trade predictable days for the adrenaline of rocket development—and help launch Australia's future in space—join Gilmour Space and make your mark on real orbital hardware.
