More about the Learning Designer - HSW/EHS Training Systems (UK time zone) role at Urban CGI

Learning DesignerUrban CGI builds behaviour-led learning systems for major construction programmes—high-consequence environments with workforces of 1,000+ and programmes north of $1bn.

What We Need

A Learning Designer - not a tools operator. Someone who thinks in systems and outcomes. You understand H&S/compliance domains deeply, can read a 40-page SOP and see the behavioural gaps, and build scenario-driven learning that moves people from "understanding" to "doing."

Articulate Storyline is your tool. Behavioural change is your outcome.

The problem we're solving:

Every SOP we've reviewed has behavioural gaps at sequence level—the moments where workers have to make calls under pressure. Tick-box modules don't move the needle. The sector still has preventable incidents because training doesn't translate to real decisions on site.

What You'll build:

  • Translate SOPs into multimedia learning systems - design learning sequences using video, posters, workbooks, quizzes, and scenarios
  • Map the sequence thought process - understand how workers think through each decision point in the SOP, then design learning that mirrors cognitive journey
  • Behaviour-led, scenario-heavy modules that train people to do the SOP, not just complete it
  • Decision-point architecture from real SME briefs (sometimes contradictory- that's the real world)
  • HSW/EHS modules for live construction programmes, delivered to client LMSs
  • Learning systems that drive culture up, performance up, incidents down

About You

  • Deep experience in compliance, H&S, or high-consequence training design
  • Skilled at translating complex SOPs into multimedia learning narratives - you brief creators and drive content strategy
  • Portfolio showing you understand domain AND learning design (not just tool skills)
  • Expert in Articulate Storyline (Rise welcome alongside)
  • UK timezone, strong English
  • Available now, can start with a short trial
  • Honest about what you don't know
  • Individual freelancer (no agencies)

When You Apply

  • Answer this: How would you translate an SOP into a learning module with multimedia elements: video, posters, workbook, quizzes - in a way that measures outcomes and encourages repeated use by workers in the field?
  • Submit a quick Loom intro (2-3 mins – just you, your background, why you're keen, salary expectation and availability: date and weekly hours commitment?
  • Share portfolio examples of training systems you've designed. We're most interested in modules from high-consequence environments where you translated complex procedures into scenario-driven learning.

Before we jump into the responsibilities of the role. No matter what you come in knowing, you’ll be learning new things all the time and the Urban CGI team will be there to support your growth.
