Helia
Sydney, NSW, Australia
Helia is Australia’s first Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI) provider, with more than 60 years of expertise in the Australian housing market. We exist to accelerate financial wellbeing through home ownership.
Our mission is to deliver innovative, tailored solutions in partnership with our customers, making the home ownership journey simpler and more accessible. We do this through efficient, customer-focused services powered by leading technology, data and digital solutions.
At Helia, our squads are made up of engineers who own what they build. That means no hand-offs and no silos — just strong engineering, shared accountability, and real impact. You’ll work across backend, frontend, infrastructure and operations, using AI tools and modern engineering practices to deliver secure, scalable solutions.
This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to grow into a genuinely full-stack, cloud-capable engineer in an AI-native environment, with support from Senior colleagues and Principal Engineers along the way.
Responsibilities
Work in a high-trust, self-managing squad.
Design, build and operate scalable, secure and maintainable solutions.
Develop backend services and APIs, work with data stores, contribute to database design and evolution, and contribute to frontend applications and user experiences.
Provision and evolve AWS infrastructure using CDK and infrastructure-as-code practices as part of normal feature delivery.
Participate in planning, estimation and delivery with shared accountability, and engage stakeholders where appropriate.
Take operational responsibility for what you build – monitoring, observability, support and continuous improvement are part of the job.
Use AI coding assistants daily to accelerate implementation, testing and refactoring, and experiment with automations or small agentic workflows to improve team productivity.
Maintain accountability for quality, correctness, security and compliance of what you ship.
Build and maintain AWS-native infrastructure using CDK as a first-class engineering activity, and understand how services deploy, scale and interact within AWS.
Apply strong software engineering fundamentals and follow DevSecOps, CI/CD, security, privacy and compliance practices in a regulated financial services context.

A willingness to work across backend, frontend and infrastructure
