Role for an Engineer to join NAB's Digital Notifications Platform — the system that delivers every customer notification (email, SMS, push, and in-app) across all NAB brands.
- Join a team of engineers building and running ~15 event-driven Java microservices with Apache Kafka at the core.
- You'll pair with senior engineers, own real tasks from day one, and learn modern distributed systems hands-on.
- Every customer communication that leaves NAB passes through our platform — the work you do here has direct, visible impact.
Our people are customer obsessed. They prioritise the needs and satisfaction of the customer above all else. Our mindset fosters innovation and creates strong, lasting customer relationships as we strive to be the most customer centric company in Australia and New Zealand.
In the role of Engineer, you will join Tim Tomazi-Osborn and the Digital Notifications team who are building and scaling this platform for NAB's customers.
Each day, you'll:
- Deliver clearly defined development tasks — including bug fixes, minor enhancements, and test coverage — across Java 17 and Spring Boot microservices.
- Maintain and enhance automated test suites (unit, integration, and contract) to keep platform reliability and engineering quality high.
- Participate in peer code reviews, offering thoughtful feedback and incorporating suggestions to continually improve code standards.
- Grow your technical capability across our core technology stack: Java 17, Spring Boot, Apache Kafka, Avro, PostgreSQL, Redis, and AWS (EKS, S3, SSM), while also using AI assisted development tools to boost productivity.
- Support operational activities such as log analysis (OpenSearch), monitoring (Prometheus/AppDynamics), and assist with incident triage under guidance.
You'll need:
- 0–2 years' experience — uni industry projects and internships count.
- Basic understanding of object-oriented programming and confidence reading existing code (Java a bonus).
- Familiarity with Git, REST APIs, and HTTP fundamentals.
- Willingness to learn good engineering practices — testing, code reviews, CI/CD — and curiosity about event-driven systems and modern tooling.
- Openness to using AI assisted coding tools (like Cursor).
