Time Type: Full timeWorker Type: EmployeeTo deliver and lead high-quality marine risk management services through technical surveys, risk analysis, and strategic recommendations. The role supports underwriters and clients by identifying exposures, advising on mitigation, and improving operational risk practices, regulatory compliance, and claims reduction, ensuring alignment with the company’s underwriting philosophy and industry standards.Key Responsibilities
1. Risk Engineering Strategy
- Contribute to the development of business strategy, plans, and objectives.
- Lead the delivery of risk engineering services and project initiatives within defined service levels and budget.
- Develop and embed industry-leading risk management capabilities that enhance the company's value proposition.
- Research and implement innovative technology and tools to expand and improve service offerings.
- Ensure all planning activities align with business priorities and long-term risk objectives.
- Provide expert technical advice to clients, brokers, and internal departments on maritime safety and operational best practices.
2. Risk Assessment & Survey Delivery
- Participate in or coordinate ship inspection programs to assess elevated risks and implement appropriate measures to reduce those elevated risks.
- Review loss prevention surveys and risk assessments conducted on client assets (vessels, terminals, and operations).
- Evaluate and report findings in line with company guidelines, highlighting risk exposures and recommending mitigation actions.
- Coordinate and oversee pre- and post-survey administrative procedures.
- Investigate root causes of claims and incidents to identify trends and recommend preventive measures.
3. Process Improvement & Compliance
- Lead the development and continuous improvement of risk engineering procedures, systems, and documentation.
- Monitor and adapt processes in response to changes in the technical, legal, regulatory, and commercial environment.
- Identify and implement best practices to improve departmental efficiency and service quality.
- Produce articles for publications and deliver presentations on safety and loss prevention topics.
- Develop and deliver training programs, including materials or seminars for clients, stakeholders, and internal personnel to support knowledge transfer and compliance with best practice.
4. Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with underwriting and claims teams (including colleagues in Asia and EO) to ensure risk engineering services align with business and client needs.
- Offer technical guidance and insights to support underwriting decisions and claims management.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, delivering tailored risk advice and solutions.
- Represent the function in internal and external meetings, demonstrating technical authority and commercial awareness.
Qualifications:
- Seafaring experience as a senior officer (Master/Chief Engineer preferred) or a strong technical/nautical background.
- Degree or diploma in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Maritime Law, or related field.
- Proven experience conducting marine surveys, including condition, pre-risk, and damage inspections.
- Understanding of marine insurance, particularly P&I and H&M operations and risks.
- Familiarity with IMO conventions, ILO regulations, and classification standards.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong analytical and risk assessment skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, including report writing.
- Ability to work independently and travel internationally (including onboard vessel visits).
- Training or presentation experience desirable.
- Proven experience conducting marine surveys, including condition, pre-risk, and damage inspections.
- Certified ISM Auditor with experience evaluating Safety Management Systems for compliance with international maritime regulations.
- Attention to detail and proactive problem-solving mindset.
- High level of professionalism and discretion.
Desirable (Not essential):
- Previous experience in a marine insurer, P&I club, classification society, or maritime consultancy.
- Working knowledge of cargo claims, crew injury litigation, or port operations.
