About QBE Capital
Writing ~$3bn GWP p.a., QBE Capital is an important exposure and capital management vehicle for the QBE Group. It is on an exciting journey, having recently been granted an expanded licence to enable it to underwrite third-party business, in addition to its existing role of underwriting internal reinsurance for divisions within QBE Group. It is key to the placement of the Group’s external reinsurance programme and played a pivotal role in the QBE Cat Bond issue in January and the loss portfolio transfers executed by the Group in recent years.
About the Role
The Financial Controller for QBE Capital is responsible for leading finance control and financial reporting for the company. The role-holder is a member of the QBE Capital Leadership team reporting to the QBE Capital Chief Financial Officer. The Financial Controller is an integral member of the QBE Group-wide Financial Controller community and will work closely with a wide variety of stakeholders including the QBE Capital Managing Director, Chief Actuary, Head of Financial Planning & Analysis and Head of Regulatory Reporting and Capital Management as well as colleagues across the wider QBE Group. The Financial Controller is the lead point of contact for the external auditors.
Key responsibilities
- Design, implement and provide oversight to a robust and high-quality financial control environment, ensuring the integrity of financial information reported internally and externally.
- Lead financial reporting for QBE Capital to QBE Group and for external reporting purposes, including AIFRS financial statements.
- Work closely with Finance Operations colleagues to manage the general ledger, reconciliation activity, and financial close processes.
- Lead QBE Capital accounting policy, with support from the Group accounting policy team as required. Determine appropriate accounting treatment for new products and initiatives.
- Manage the relationship and interactions with the external auditors.
- Manage FX exposure through hedging.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement in relevant processes and ways of working, collaborating closely with colleagues across the Group to improve the efficiency and quality of financial control and reporting activities.
- Lead the QBE Capital Finance Management Committee.
- Lead, motivate and develop a high performing, empowered, and well-connected Finance Control team, promoting and role-modelling the QBE DNA.
- Deliver presentations as required to stakeholder groups, including the QBE Capital Board Audit Committee, Finance Management Committee and QBE Capital whole-team meetings.
- Build close and collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders at QBE Group. Ensure clear and regular communication to ensure that QBE Group are kept abreast of developments and have a clear understanding of QBE Capital’s financial performance.
- Build close working relationships with key stakeholders in other divisions and teams across the Group, to build deep understanding of relevant business developments and drive improvements in the accuracy and quality of information and insight provided to QBE Capital.
- Collaborate with the wider QBE Capital Leadership Team to support development and execution of QBE Capital’s strategic priorities.
Skills and experience
- Qualified accountant with significant experience in financial control and financial reporting in a large international insurance group.
- Strong knowledge of IFRS including IFRS17.
- Deep understanding of general (re)insurance.
- Proficiency in accounting software and tools.
- Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop teams.
- Track record of improving financial control environments and close processes.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Collaborative and highly proactive team-player.
- High integrity.
