Lead Treaty Underwriter

QBE Capital, the captive reinsurer of QBE, is seeking a highly skilled and motivated professional to join our global reinsurance team as Lead Underwriter. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in underwriting a diverse portfolio of property catastrophe, property risk, casualty, and specialty business worldwide. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with actuarial pricing, ceded reinsurance, broking partners, and the wider QBE Group to deliver tailored reinsurance solutions and drive portfolio performance.

Your new role:

  • Underwrite a global portfolio across property catastrophe, property risk, casualty, and specialty reinsurance lines.
  • Collaborate with actuarial pricing and ceded reinsurance teams to assess risk and optimise portfolio performance.
  • Analyse risk profiles, apply pricing tools and methodologies, and interpret loss models to support underwriting decisions.
  • Monitor and report on underwriting results, including performance analysis and exposure management.
  • Review and negotiate contract wordings, ensuring alignment with market standards and business objectives.
  • Develop and tailor reinsurance solutions that meet client needs and support strategic business planning.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders across the QBE Group.
  • Present underwriting rationale and portfolio insights to internal and external stakeholders with clarity and confidence.
  • Contribute to the development of underwriting strategies and best practices within the team.
  • Support the onboarding and mentoring of junior underwriters as needed.

About You:

  • Preferably 7+ years, but a minimum of 5 years' experience, operating in an open market environment in either underwriting or broking. Casualty or specialty experience is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of pricing methodologies, loss modelling, exposure management, and performance reporting.
  • Proficiency in contract wordings and familiarity with standard clauses across multiple lines of business.
  • Commercial acumen and initiative to develop bespoke reinsurance solutions and contribute to portfolio planning.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational and analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
  • Confidence in presenting complex analysis and recommendations to diverse audiences.
  • Industry certification such as ACII, ARe, or CPCU (or equivalent) is preferred.
