Time Type: Full timeWorker Type: EmployeeTo provide underwriting, technical support, assist in the development and management of a profitable business portfolio under the specified insurance class according to the Company’s guidelines and delegated authorities.Primary Responsibilities • Strategy and Planning •Contribute to the achievement of operational objectives for the underwriting function and/or business unit. •Participate in meetings, as required, to support the development of strategy, share knowledge and best practice. •Apply the reinsurance strategy in order to safeguard the portfolio. •Positively promote the department, division and company as a whole in order to maximize brand leverage. •Policy, Process and Procedures •Underwrite new and existing policies in accordance with organizational policy, underwriting standards and regulatory/legal requirements. •Adhere to underwriting standards, instructions and good practice to minimize risk and maximize efficiency. •Monitor and review underwriting standards procedures and checklists. •Ensure all documentation is accurate and complies with organizational guidelines. •Contribute to continuous quality improvement processes. •Understand and comply with any reinsurance requirements to minimize risk and to deliver business plan objectives. •Environmental Awareness/Customer Focus •Establish, strengthen and develop relationships with customers, brokers, reinsured, business partners and colleagues to maximize influence and achieve business objectives. •Demonstrate an understanding and awareness of market dynamics and market cycle to enhance business performance. •Provide a timely and professional level of service to customers and intermediaries. •Deliver timely decisions and problem solving solutions for customers and intermediaries. •Learn about new products and understand commission structures for each, in order to enhance relationships with intermediaries and reinsured. •Technical Performance •Maintain expertise and knowledge through identifying appropriate learning and development activities. •Evaluate risk for new business in accordance with standards, to ensure profitable growth. •Participate in the review and analysis of the portfolio to identify progress toward business objectives. •Identify new business opportunities and self-insurance prospects. •Accurately indicate trends by class of business and business unit. •Establish appropriate measurement techniques and reporting systems. •Build strong knowledge of current legislation, best practice, underwriting acceptance levels, systems and organizational guidelines. •People Management •May assist with coaching/mentoring Junior Underwriters. Preferred Competencies/Skills • Negotiation and problem-solving skills. • Relationship management and communication skills. • Analytical and research skills. Preferred Education Specifics • Relevant tertiary qualifications, specialist qualifications or equivalent. Preferred Experience • 7+years of underwriting experience. • Some established customer/broker/agent/ reinsured. relationships. Preferred Knowledge • Good insurance industry knowledge. • Understanding of relevant market conditions.
