About Quantum Brilliance

Quantum Brilliance is the world leader in room-temperature quantum computing using synthetic diamonds. Our unique vision is to make quantum computing available as an everyday technology, from data centres to remote and mobile systems like autonomous robots and satellites. In contrast to quantum computers that fill a room, we are developing quantum accelerators with more compute power than a classical supercomputer but in a form factor smaller than a lunchbox.

Founded in 2019 by leaders in diamond quantum science from the Australian National University, we are a full-stack quantum computing company. An Australia-German company, our HQs are in Canberra and Stuttgart, with additional locations across eastern Australia and southern Germany. We are working with global technology leaders to develop quantum computing applications, integrate quantum with high-performance computing, solve materials science challenges and develop ultra-precise semiconductor manufacturing and quantum control techniques. We are backed by leading venture capital funds and major research and technology institutes.

The Mission

The Senior Electronic Engineer plays a key role in the product development of our compact, room-temperature quantum computers, taking outputs and insights from our laboratory R&D efforts and working with a multidisciplinary team to shape these into commercial systems for delivery to a growing customer base worldwide. This is a unique opportunity to enter the quantum industry and contribute to the future of quantum computing.

About the role

The successful candidate will work with our Canberra-based Quantum Devices and Development team. We are a small and dynamic team, passionate about innovation and driving market traction for quantum systems and solutions that will shape the future. The Senior Electronic Engineer will be active across all areas of design, development, manufacture and delivery of electronic sub-systems for integration into full-stack quantum computers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Electronic product development: design, develop, build, test, integrate, characterise and document electronic and RF sub-systems, including interfacing with firmware, optical systems and mechanical packaging.
  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams of physicists, engineers and project managers to integrate hardware designs and test plans with system requirements and constraints.
  • Optimize power management, signal integrity, and thermal management of electronic systems.
  • Ensure products are compliant with the relevant industry standards for export and import.
  • Balance reliability and customer support needs with cutting edge system delivery, and project timelines.
  • Assess, improve and maintain engineering documentation, and systems engineering and quality assurance processes.
  • Support, troubleshoot, maintain and upgrade variants of this electronic hardware for both product and laboratory quantum computer experiments.
  • Contribute to project planning, timelines, and deliverables, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers as appropriate.
  • Other duties as required (we are a small team and share responsibility for administrative tasks such as inventory management, supplier relationships and procurement, mechanical assembly, and maintaining workshop/lab safety and ergonomics).

Key responsibilities for this position will be refined based on the successful candidate’s area(s) of expertise, level of experience, and how those complement the other members of our team.

About You

We are looking for someone who brings expertise in supporting a product(s) through the full lifecycle, as well as deep technical experience. Resourcefulness, organisation, and strong communication and collaboration skills are essential.

Essential skills and experience:

  • 5+ years professional experience in electronic circuit design, development, and testing.
  • Proven experience developing and bringing a product(s) to market through the full lifecycle, from ideation to successful delivery.
  • Electronics design in Altium, or related ECAD Software.
  • Knowledge of PCB design and layout for signal integrity, EMC, immunity, vibration, and environmental impacts.
  • Knowledge of communication buses i.e.I2C, SPI, Ethernet, LVDS etc.
  • Programming capability: ability to automate test equipment and control embedded systems with e.g. Python (highly desirable), C/C++, Arduino, Linux, or Raspberry Pi.
  • Ability to follow and produce written/visual documentation independently such as: Test plans, Assembly documents, System diagrams.
  • Ability to proactively solve complex systems problems in collaboration with other Engineering/Physics/Science disciplines in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
  • Ability to set priorities to accomplish complex projects within deadlines and adapt to rapidly changing needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, collaborative mindset, and demonstrated ability to work within a small multi-disciplinary team.

Qualifications/Certifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Electronic or Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Engineering are highly desirable.

Desired skills and experience that will help you excel:

  • Experience or interest in quantum computing or a related field.
  • Extensive experience designing/simulating, testing, reviewing and debugging RF and high-speed circuits, with an iterative design mindset.
  • Expertise in embedded FPGAs and microcontrollers.
  • Experience with experimental control systems: analogue and digital I/O, software control of hardware, and/or detailed control systems design.
  • Mechanical CAD experience, e.g. Fuison360, Inventor
  • Experience working to international standards and meeting the requirements for CE Marking of a complex product.
  • Experience in team and/or project leadership, ideally with teams who follow agile methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Confluence and Jira for knowledge and project management.

Note that we may also consider applications from less senior electrical engineers, where their skillset, experiences and career goals are an excellent fit for our needs. Please indicate in your cover letter if you think you fit this profile, as we may have a suitable role.
