Location: This is a hybrid role with a minimum in-office requirement of 3 days per week in the Ottawa, ON office located at 40 Hines Rd, Ottawa, ON K2K 2M5.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a proactive R&D Manager to join our Vision One Platform at Trend Micro. The ideal candidate will drive the creation of high-quality applications and value streams while taking on the role of people manager for the engineers on the team. This position demands a combination of technical prowess and leadership capabilities, including expertise in service/software architecture, stellar communication skills, and adept planning and prioritization abilities. The R&D Manager will navigate the path forward, removing technical and coordination barriers to ensure successful product delivery. We seek an individual who thrives on overseeing the entire picture and can make tough decisions to get things done. Moreover, this role involves practical AI integration to boost development efficiency and product performance, ensuring the team stays ahead in the tech field.

As a R&D Manager at Trend Micro, your responsibilities will include:

Technical Leadership:

  • Lead technical discussions and make pivotal decisions concerning the architecture and implementation of advanced cloud-native applications.

  • Guide the development team using agile methodologies, including backlog refinement, prioritization, requirement documentation, and bottleneck resolution to achieve consistent business and customer outcomes.

  • Supervise the team’s technical endeavors, steering project direction and ensuring top-notch results.

  • Keep up with industry trends and technologies to maintain the team’s competitive edge.

  • Engage in continual learning and improvement, creating opportunities for the team to gain new skills and knowledge.

  • Demonstrate AI expertise through 2+ real-world projects: specify your role, AI tools/models used (e.g., LLMs, predictive analytics), and measurable impact (e.g., 20% faster dev cycles).

  • Monitor AI advancements and integrate applicable techniques into team workflows.

Product Ownership:

  • Partner with stakeholders to gain a deep understanding of both functional and non-functional requirements, driving the development of new products and features.

  • Manage communications, planning, and integration for Vision One-related areas, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Lead project planning and execution, ensuring clear specifications, direction, and adequate resources for delivering high-quality projects on time, with a strong focus on customer experience.

  • Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks early to improve predictability and enhance team performance.

  • Apply AI in product dev (e.g., AI-driven features, automation), demonstrating business impact in past roles.

People Management:

  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with direct reports at least quarterly.

  • Oversee the recruitment process, from drafting job descriptions to reviewing resumes, interviewing, making offers, and onboarding new team members.

  • Perform biannual alignment evaluations to assess the team’s impact and growth potential, identifying opportunities for career development.

  • Handle annual salary reviews, including providing feedback on salary adjustments.

  • Foster and enhance team culture, offering mentorship and guidance to team members to support their professional growth.

  • Use AI tools (e.g., resume screening, performance analytics) to streamline recruitment and evaluations—a plus if experienced.

Operational Support:

  • Assist in managing project management and logistics within Trend Micro including the allocation of equipment and IT assets (e.g., laptops) and recruitment information.

  • Facilitate seamless integration with HR, IT, and administrative departments by providing resources, addressing inquiries, and escalating issues as necessary.

  • Leverage AI for ops efficiency (e.g., asset tracking automation)—practical examples preferred.
